How we rank
A ranking is only as honest as the criteria behind it. Here is our rubric, the weights we assign, and a plain statement of what these rankings are and are not.
The scoring criteria
Every entry in our rankings is evaluated against the same six criteria. The weights below reflect what we believe matters most to a Missouri homeowner living with hard water and choosing who to trust with their plumbing.

Local accountability and ownership
Who answers when something leaks? We weight companies where ownership is close to the work: family-owned and owner-operated businesses with a stake in their local reputation score highest, because accountability is the thing a homeowner cannot install later.

Water testing before recommendation
Equipment should follow evidence. We reward providers that test your actual water, in your home, before proposing anything, and that put the results in writing. Free testing scores above paid; testing of any kind scores above none.

Service area coverage
A defined, honest service area beats a vague statewide claim. We look for clear county-level coverage and a realistic radius a service truck can actually reach when a valve fails on a Friday.

Product range and fit
Households differ, so the catalog should too. We credit providers able to match equipment to tested conditions: softener sizes across the residential range, iron and filtration options where wells demand them, and honest guidance between salt-based and salt-free approaches.

Installation practices
We look for installation done to local code: proper drain air gaps, bypass valves, permits pulled where required, and valve programming set to the customer's tested hardness rather than factory defaults.

Transparency and communication
Clear answers to direct questions: who performs the work, what the warranty covers, which control valve is installed, and who services it afterward. Providers that make this easy to learn score higher.

Our rankings are the editorial opinion of this site, formed by applying the criteria above to publicly available information about each provider and to the general characteristics of each purchasing path. They are not laboratory results, not a census of customer outcomes, and not a guarantee of your experience. National brands and manufacturers appear with neutral, factual descriptions; we do not publish invented pricing, invented statistics, or unverified negative claims about any company.
