Why Missouri water is hard
Run a thumb around the inside of a Missouri tea kettle that has seen a few years of service and you will feel the state's geology: a chalky, gray-white crust of mineral scale. That crust is the end of a story that begins underground, and understanding the story is the first step in deciding what, if anything, to do about it.
Water hardness is a measure of dissolved calcium and magnesium, expressed in milligrams per liter or in grains per gallon. The U.S. Geological Survey's general classification runs like this: 0 to 60 milligrams per liter is soft, 61 to 120 is moderately hard, 121 to 180 is hard, and anything above 180 is very hard. Those are the reference lines this guide uses throughout.
Missouri's problem, in general documented terms, is carbonate rock. Large portions of the state are underlain by limestone and dolomite, and the southern half of Missouri, the Ozark Highlands, is classic karst country: a landscape of caves, springs, sinkholes, and losing streams carved by water dissolving rock over geologic time. Rainwater absorbs carbon dioxide from the air and soil, forming a weak carbonic acid. As that slightly acidic water percolates down through limestone and dolomite, it dissolves calcium carbonate and magnesium along the way. By the time it reaches an aquifer, it has picked up exactly the minerals that make water hard.
What this means at the tap depends on where your water comes from. Groundwater across much of Missouri commonly tests hard to very hard by the classification above, and private wells in the east-central counties, where much of the state's newer housing sits, routinely measure well into the very hard range. Municipal systems that draw from the Missouri and Mississippi rivers generally deliver water on the softer end for the region, often in the moderately hard to hard bands, which is gentler than most well water but still enough to scale a water heater over the years. The only way to know your own number is to test, which is why this guide keeps returning to that advice.
The household symptoms are familiar: white crust on faucets and showerheads, spotted glassware out of the dishwasher, soap that will not quite lather, a bathtub ring that comes back the day after you scrub it, towels that dry stiff, and a water heater that rumbles as it fires. None of these are dangerous. Hard water is a nuisance and an appliance tax, not a health hazard. But the nuisance is real, it is measurable, and it is fixable, which is what the rest of this guide is about.
How softeners work
A water softener is a simpler machine than its price tag suggests. At its heart is a tank filled with tiny resin beads, each one carrying a negative charge and holding sodium ions the way a bulletin board holds pins. When hard water flows through the tank, calcium and magnesium ions, which cling more strongly than sodium does, knock the sodium loose and take its place on the beads. The water leaves the tank carrying a little sodium instead of its hardness minerals. That swap is called ion exchange, and it is the entire trick.
The catch is that the resin eventually fills up with hardness minerals and runs out of sodium to trade. This is where the second tank, the brine tank, earns its keep. On a schedule, usually in the small hours of the morning, the control valve draws salty water from the brine tank and flushes it backward through the resin. The concentrated sodium overwhelms the accumulated calcium and magnesium, strips them off the beads, and carries them down the drain. A rinse follows, the brine tank refills, and the softener returns to service recharged. The whole sequence is called regeneration, and it is why a softener needs three things: salt, a drain, and a little patience at three in the morning.
Control valves come in two temperaments. Timer-based valves regenerate on fixed days whether the resin needs it or not, which is simple but wasteful. Metered valves, sometimes called demand-initiated, count the actual gallons you use and regenerate only when the resin is genuinely near capacity. Metered control is the modern standard, and it is worth insisting on: it saves salt, saves water, and adapts automatically when the in-laws visit for a week.
One honest boundary to draw before moving on: a softener is not a filter. It removes hardness minerals and, within limits, small amounts of dissolved iron. It does not disinfect water, does not remove chlorine taste, lead, nitrates, or bacteria, and does not fix a rotten egg smell on its own. Sizing for your household
Softeners are sold by grain capacity: the total grains of hardness a unit can remove between regenerations. Sizing one is arithmetic, not art, and it protects you from the two classic sales mistakes, the bargain unit that is too small and the flagship unit that is far too large.
The formula: people in the household, times gallons of water used per person per day, times water hardness in grains per gallon. Indoor use commonly runs around 60 to 75 gallons per person per day, so 70 is a fair planning number. Take a family of four on well water that tests at 18 grains per gallon: 4 people times 70 gallons times 18 grains is 5,040 grains of softening needed every day.
From there, aim for a unit that regenerates roughly every five to seven days with a day of reserve in hand. Our example family needs about 25,000 to 35,000 grains of usable capacity between regenerations, which points to the mid-size class of residential softeners. Two adults on moderately hard city water might land a class smaller; a large family on very hard well water lands a class larger. If your water carries dissolved iron, add roughly 3 to 5 grains per gallon to your hardness number for every 1 milligram per liter of iron before you run the math, because iron consumes softening capacity too.
A wrinkle worth knowing: the capacity printed on the box is a nominal, maximum-salt figure. A so-called 32,000 grain softener only reaches that number when it burns through salt at its least efficient setting. Programmed sensibly, the same unit delivers somewhat less capacity per cycle while using dramatically less salt. Good installers size the resin generously and program the salt dose modestly, which is the configuration that keeps operating costs down for the next decade.
The failure modes at either extreme are worth naming. An undersized softener regenerates constantly, chewing through salt and water and wearing out its valve years early. A grossly oversized one costs more up front and can sit so idle that water stagnates in the resin bed between cycles. The arithmetic above steers you between the two, and any seller who quotes a size without asking about people, usage, and a tested hardness number is guessing with your money.
Salt vs salt-free, honestly
This is the chapter where buyer's guides usually go soft, so let us be precise instead. A water softener, by definition, removes calcium and magnesium from water. Ion exchange, the salt-based process described in chapter two, is the residential technology that actually does this. The products marketed as salt-free softeners are, with few exceptions, conditioners: they treat the behavior of the minerals without removing them.
The most credible salt-free technology is template assisted crystallization, usually shortened to TAC. Its media coaxes dissolved hardness into microscopic crystals that tend to stay suspended in the water rather than plating onto pipes and heating elements. Done well, this meaningfully reduces new scale formation, which is a genuine benefit. But the minerals are all still in the water. The water does not feel soft, soap behaves the same, glassware still spots as droplets dry, and existing scale is not removed. A TAC unit also does nothing for iron and is not a fit for water with significant iron or manganese.
Salt-based softening has its own honest ledger. It needs a drain and sends a salty rinse down it during every regeneration, a practice some communities in other states have restricted, though it remains standard in Missouri. It consumes bags of salt you will carry down the basement stairs. And it adds sodium to the softened water: in general documented terms, roughly 8 milligrams per liter for each grain per gallon of hardness removed. For most people that is a modest amount, on the order of what naturally occurs in many foods, but people on strictly sodium-restricted diets often keep an unsoftened cold line at the kitchen sink, add a reverse osmosis drinking system, or regenerate with potassium chloride instead of sodium chloride, accepting that potassium salt costs several times more per bag.
So where does each belong? Choose a conditioner when your hardness is modest, your only real complaint is scale, and you lack a drain, a salt appetite, or the will to maintain anything. Choose a true softener when your water is genuinely hard, which describes most Missouri groundwater, when iron is in the picture, or when you actually want the felt benefits: lather, soft laundry, spot-free glass, and a water heater that stays efficient. Neither choice is wrong. Buying one while believing it is the other is the only mistake this chapter exists to prevent.
What installation involves
An installation done properly is a half-day of skilled work; done poorly, it is a slow leak behind a finished wall. Knowing what the job actually involves lets you judge which one you are being sold, whether you hire it out or take it on yourself.
The softener wants a specific address in your plumbing: on the main line where water enters the house, after the meter on city water or after the pressure tank on a well, and before the water heater so that hot and cold both run soft. It needs three utilities within reach: a drain for regeneration water, a standard 120 volt outlet for the valve, and a level, dry patch of floor that will not freeze. Outdoor spigots are often left on the hard side of the connection, since lawns and gardens have no opinion about hardness and irrigating with softened water wastes capacity.
The work itself follows a steady order: shut off and depressurize the house, cut into the main line, set a bypass valve so the softener can be serviced without shutting water to the house, plumb the inlet and outlet, run the drain line to a standpipe or floor drain with a proper air gap, connect the brine tank overflow, then program the valve with your tested hardness, sanitize the system, and run a first regeneration. Newer Missouri homes are often built with a soft water loop, a pre-plumbed bypass in the garage or utility room that reduces the whole job to connecting four fittings.
On rules: Missouri does not impose a single statewide residential plumbing code, so requirements are set locally and vary by city and county. Some jurisdictions want a permit or a licensed plumber for the tie-in; nearly all follow standard practice on drain air gaps and backflow protection. A local installer who pulls permits in your municipality every week carries that knowledge with them, which is a quiet but real part of what you are paying for. Maintenance costs in general ranges
A softener is a low-drama appliance, but it is not a zero-cost one, and a buyer's guide that skips the upkeep chapter is not being straight with you. What follows are general ranges drawn from how this equipment behaves in the field, not quotes from any provider; your own numbers will move with your hardness, your household size, and your salt-aisle choices.
Salt is the steady expense. A typical household consumes roughly one to three 40 pound bags per month, with very hard well water and big families at the top of that range and metered valves keeping everyone toward the bottom. At retail, softener salt generally runs from the mid single digits to the low teens of dollars per bag depending on purity and type, with plain crystals cheapest, evaporated pellets at a premium, and potassium chloride costing several times more than any sodium option. Called annually, salt is a modest line item; the habit that matters is glancing in the brine tank once a month.
Water is the second consumable. Each regeneration sends somewhere in the general range of 25 to 65 gallons down the drain, and a well-programmed metered softener regenerates once or twice a week. That is a real but small addition to household water use, comparable to a few extra loads of laundry a month.
Then there is care. Once a year or two, the brine tank benefits from being emptied and rinsed out. Homes with iron in the water should run a resin cleaning product on the label's schedule, because iron slowly fouls resin that regular regeneration cannot fully rescue. Watch for salt bridges in humid basements. And every few years, it is worth having the valve settings and salt dose checked, because water conditions drift and so do habits.
Long term, the resin bed itself typically serves about 10 to 15 years, shorter where chlorinated city water or iron chews at it, and a simple carbon prefilter can extend its life. Control valves are rebuildable, with seals and pistons available for the common brands, which is one reason chapter seven suggests asking any installer which valve they use and whether parts are stocked locally. Electricity, for the record, is a rounding error: the valve draws about as much as a clock radio.
When to call a pro
Most of this guide argues that you can understand this purchase yourself, and you can. This last chapter is about the situations where understanding it yourself leads you, sensibly, to hire it out.
The first is any private well. Well water in Missouri deserves a fuller test than a hardness strip: iron, manganese, hydrogen sulfide, pH, nitrates, and bacteria at minimum, because each of those changes what equipment belongs in the house and in what order. State and county programs offer well-owner testing guidance, and reputable local water companies test in your home as part of a quote. When multiple problems show up together, the sequence of treatment matters as much as the equipment, and sequencing is exactly the judgment a good professional sells.
The second is a symptom that points past simple hardness: orange or brown staining in tubs and toilets, a rotten egg smell at the tap, blue-green stains that suggest acidic water working on copper pipe, or recurring pinhole leaks. Each of these has several possible causes with different fixes, and a softener alone will disappoint you. The third is plumbing reality: aged galvanized lines, no drain within reach, a finished space where mistakes cost real money, or a municipality whose permit rules you would rather not learn by citation.
What should hiring well look like? A good professional tests your water in front of you and leaves the numbers in writing. They size from arithmetic like chapter three, not from a brochure tier. They install to local code, set the valve to your tested hardness, and tell you what they set it to. And they answer the phone after the check clears. Before you sign, ask five things:
- Are you licensed and insured for plumbing work in my municipality?
- Will I get my water test results in writing, with hardness in grains per gallon?
- Which control valve do you install, and are rebuild parts available locally?
- Who performs service after installation: you, or a subcontractor?
- What exactly does the warranty cover, and what voids it?
