A water softener installation is not complete when the pipes are connected. The installer still needs to start the system, check its operation and show you how to manage it. This final process is often called commissioning.
Good commissioning gives you evidence that the equipment works with your water conditions and plumbing. It also creates a clear starting point for future service. Before the appointment ends, you should understand what was tested, what settings were entered and what you need to watch during the first regeneration cycle.
Confirm the installation matches the agreed scope
Begin with the physical installation. Compare the installed equipment with your proposal or work order. Check the model number, tank arrangement, control valve and any included prefilter or specialty treatment equipment. If the proposal identified which fixtures would receive softened water, confirm that the plumbing follows that plan.
Ask the installer to point out the untreated water inlet, softened water outlet, drain connection, bypass valve, electrical connection and brine line. Look for visible leaks, strained tubing, unsupported pipes and sharp bends in drain or brine lines. The salt tank should sit on a stable surface where its lid can be removed without moving other equipment.
The drain line deserves particular attention because the system uses it during regeneration. Ask where the line discharges and how backflow is prevented. It should be secured so that water pressure cannot pull it loose. If an overflow line is installed on the salt tank, ask where it leads and remember that it serves a different purpose from the control valve drain.
Record the starting water conditions
Ask the installer which test results were used to select and program the softener. At minimum, you need the hardness result and its unit of measurement. Well-water installations may require other findings, such as iron or manganese, because those substances can affect equipment selection, programming and maintenance.
Keep a copy of the results with the equipment paperwork. A verbal description such as moderately hard is not enough to recreate the setup later. If the installer adjusted a laboratory result or compensated for another water condition when entering the hardness setting, ask them to record both the measured result and the number entered into the controller.

Have every programmed setting explained
Stand at the control valve while the installer reviews its settings. Ask to see the hardness setting, current time, regeneration mode, capacity or dosage setting and any reserve or override setting available on the controller. The labels vary by equipment, so focus on what each setting controls rather than the label alone.
Do not assume the factory defaults fit your home. Ask which values were changed and why. If regeneration is metered, confirm that the system measures actual water use. If a maximum-day override is enabled, ask what it does. If the controller requires the current time to remain accurate for delayed regeneration, learn how to reset it after a power interruption.
Take a clear photo of each settings screen or request a written commissioning sheet. That record can save time if a future technician replaces a part, resets the controller or questions the original setup.
Watch the installer run a manual regeneration check
The installer should advance the valve through its regeneration stages or begin an appropriate startup cycle. You do not need to memorize every sound. You should verify that the valve changes positions, water reaches the drain and each connected line stays secure.
Ask the installer to identify the stages as the system moves through them. Depending on the equipment, these may include backwash, brine draw, rinse and brine-tank refill. Confirm that the drain flow starts and stops when expected. Look at the drain connection and nearby fittings throughout the check for dripping, movement or overflow.
During the brine-draw check, the liquid level in the brine tank should respond as intended. During refill, the system should deliver the programmed amount of water back to the tank. Ask how high the normal liquid level should appear for your particular setup. A brine tank does not need to be filled with visible water to be working correctly.
Check the bypass and household water flow
Have the installer demonstrate the bypass valve slowly. You should know which position sends water through the softener, which position bypasses it and whether there is a separate shutoff. Labeling the positions near the equipment can prevent confusion during a leak or service call.
Then run water at representative fixtures. Check a nearby faucet, a distant fixture and any location that was intentionally left untreated. Watch for poor flow, cloudy water that does not clear, trapped air, unusual particles or plumbing noise. Some air after plumbing work can be expected, but the installer should flush the system and explain what remains normal.
If an outdoor faucet, refrigerator line, kitchen cold tap or irrigation connection has special routing, test it rather than relying on assumptions. Record which outlets receive softened water. This makes later troubleshooting much easier.
Verify performance with follow-up testing
Ask the installer to test water from an untreated source and a softened source after the system has been placed in service and adequately flushed. Keep the readings and test locations in writing. The purpose is to establish that the untreated and treated samples are meaningfully different, not merely to hear that the water feels softer.
Ask when the treated sample becomes representative of the new system. Water already sitting in a water heater or long plumbing run may not immediately reflect the softener's operation. The installer should explain where the sample was taken and whether another check is needed after stored water has turned over.
If the treated result does not match the promised outcome, do not accept repeated programming changes without documentation. Ask what changed, why it changed and what result will confirm that the adjustment worked.
Review salt setup and operating supplies
Ask which salt type the equipment requires and whether the tank was filled during commissioning. Learn the suggested minimum and maximum salt levels, how often you should look inside the tank and what a salt bridge looks like. Also ask whether the initial startup requires a different procedure from routine refilling.
If the system uses a cleaner, cartridge, chemical feed or other consumable, record the exact product specification and replacement procedure. Confirm whether using a substitute affects performance or warranty coverage. You should leave with enough information to obtain the correct supplies without guessing from the shape or color of a container.
Learn the controls you may actually need
The installer should show you how to read the display, check remaining capacity if available, start a manual regeneration and correct the clock. Ask what each warning symbol or error code means and which conditions require a service call.
Also ask what happens during a power outage, water shutoff or extended absence. Some controllers preserve programming but lose the current time. Others may need a specific vacation setting or restart procedure. Write these instructions beside the model and serial numbers.
Agree on the first follow-up
Before the installer leaves, establish who will handle questions and what evidence the provider wants if something seems wrong. Useful documentation can include a photo of the display, a short video of an unusual drain cycle, the salt and water level in the brine tank, the time of the last regeneration and test results from named fixtures.
Ask whether the provider includes a post-installation water test or operating review. If so, put the timing and scope in writing. Clarify whether adjustments are included and whether a visit can result in a separate service charge.

Build a commissioning record before signing off
Collect the proposal, final invoice, water-test results, model and serial numbers, warranty information, programming values and photos of the completed installation. Add the provider's service number and the location of the main shutoff. If any item remains unfinished, list it on the work order with the person responsible for completing it.
Do not sign a statement saying the system operates correctly until the installer has checked for leaks, demonstrated regeneration, explained the bypass and documented the starting settings. If part of the process cannot be completed during the visit, ask for a written reason and a specific next step.
A practical final walkthrough
Before the installer packs up, you should be able to answer five questions: Which fixtures receive softened water? What hardness value is programmed? How do you bypass the unit? What salt or supplies does it require? Who do you contact if the next regeneration does not complete normally?
If any answer is unclear, ask for another demonstration. A properly commissioned softener should not leave you guessing about its setup or normal operation. The best handoff is simple: documented settings, verified water flow, a completed cycle check and clear instructions for what you need to do next.
