A water softener can appear to have a full supply of salt while receiving almost none of it. The usual cause is a salt bridge, a hardened layer that spans the brine tank and leaves an empty space underneath.
The control valve may continue running scheduled regeneration cycles. Water may enter and leave the brine tank. The display may show no obvious error. But if the salt is suspended above the water, the system cannot make the brine it needs to recharge the resin.
The practical question is not simply whether there is salt in the tank. It is whether that salt is actually reaching the water at the bottom.
What an early salt bridge looks like
The first warning is a salt level that does not change. Mark the level with removable tape or take a photo from the same angle. Check it again after the softener has completed one or more regeneration cycles. Salt use varies with household demand and system settings, but a level that remains perfectly fixed deserves a closer look.
You may also notice that the top surface looks unusually smooth or solid. Loose pellets normally shift when touched. Bridged salt may form a firm shelf around the tank wall.
Hard-water symptoms can appear later, but they are not the best early warning. By the time soap stops lathering normally or scale begins returning, the softener may already have missed multiple effective regenerations.
Check the salt without damaging the tank
Remove the brine tank lid and use a flashlight. Look for a gap around the edge of the salt or a crust attached to the tank wall. Do not assume the visible surface tells you what is underneath.
Use a clean wooden or plastic handle to press gently downward in several locations. Keep it away from the brine well, float assembly and tubing. Loose salt should give gradually. A bridge may feel like a hard floor and then break into an open cavity below.
Do not strike the side of the tank, use a sharp metal tool or push with enough force to puncture the plastic. If you cannot identify the internal components, stop before probing near them.
Break up a simple bridge carefully
If the crust is easy to reach, loosen it gradually from the top. Break large sections into smaller pieces and allow the salt to fall into the cavity. Avoid forcing heavy slabs against the brine well or float assembly.
Remove any obvious foreign material. If the bottom contains a thick paste instead of loose salt and water, the problem may be salt mushing rather than a simple bridge. Adding more salt on top will not correct a compacted mass at the bottom.
After loosening the salt, confirm that the brine well, float and tubing remain in place. Add salt only if the usable level is genuinely low. Filling the tank to the lid makes future inspection harder and can allow another hidden cavity to develop.
Confirm that the softener is working again
Breaking the crust is only the first step. The resin may still need a successful regeneration before the water becomes soft again.
Follow the unit's instructions for starting a manual regeneration. Before doing so, make sure the softener is not bypassed, the water supply is on and the drain route is unobstructed. Stay nearby long enough to look for leaks, unusual noises or water rising toward the top of the brine tank.
After the regeneration is complete, test the cold water at a softened fixture with a hardness test kit. Do not rely only on how the water feels. Test first at a fixture close to the softener, then at a more distant softened fixture after flushing both lines.
If hardness remains, check whether the bypass valve is fully in the service position. Also check the display for an error, an incorrect time setting or a loss of programming. A salt bridge can explain failed brine production, but it is not the only reason a softener may stop treating water.
Why salt bridges come back
A recurring bridge points to a condition that has not been corrected. Moisture and temperature changes around the brine tank can encourage salt to bind together. Keeping the tank packed to the top can make inspection difficult and place more weight on compacted salt below.
The salt itself may also matter. Pellets, crystals and blocks do not behave identically in every brine tank. Check the manufacturer's instructions before changing salt type. The correct choice depends on the equipment, not just what is easiest to carry home.
Look at the room as well as the machine. Check for dripping pipes, condensation, a loose lid or water reaching the tank from outside. Do not seal the equipment inside an enclosure that interferes with access or ventilation.
When the problem needs service
Call for service if the bridge returns soon after removal, the salt has turned into a dense paste, the brine tank water rises unusually high, or the system completes a cycle without drawing down the brine. These signs can point to a restricted injector, a stuck float, a valve problem or incorrect refill settings.
Ask the technician to identify the failed step in the brining process. A useful diagnosis should explain whether the unit fills the tank, dissolves enough salt, draws the brine and refills to the correct level. Ask for a hardness reading before and after service so you can verify the result.
Do not accept repeated instructions to add more salt without an explanation of why the existing salt is not being used. A nearly full tank is not proof that the softener has an adequate brine supply.
What to compare when choosing a provider or replacement
If you are selecting a service company, ask how it diagnoses brine problems before replacing parts. The provider should be willing to inspect the salt condition, brine well, float, injector, tubing, valve operation and programmed settings.
If replacement is being considered, check whether the brine tank opening is large enough for routine inspection and cleaning. Make sure the lid can be removed in the installed location and that the internal components remain accessible after nearby storage is added.

A simple habit that catches the problem early
Each time you check the salt, look for three things: a changing salt level, loose material at the surface and a tank that is dry on the outside. Keep the area accessible enough to remove the lid and see inside.
If the level stops moving, investigate before pouring in another bag. Finding a hollow space under the salt is inconvenient. Finding it before the house returns to hard water is much easier than diagnosing the problem after scale and soap performance have already changed.
